When Jonathan and Sarah Hammer began looking for a house in West Hartford, a bustling suburb abutting Connecticut’s capital city, it was immediately clear that they were in a fiercely competitive market. Early in March, they submitted an offer for $16,000 above the asking price for a five-bedroom colonial. Their offer was rejected, and the property later sold for closer to $90,000 above list.

WEST HARTFORD (AP) One person was killed and another was sent to a hospital after fire struck a house in West Hartford, officials said.
The fire in a single-family home was reported shortly before 10 p.m. Saturday, Fire Chief Greg Priest said in a statement.
Heavy flames were coming from the front of the house when firefighters arrived, Priest said. Firefighters worked to put the fire out while looking for one or two people who were still inside, he said.
One of the people trapped in the house “suffered non-survivable injuries in the blaze and was pronounced dead, Priest said. The victim s name was not immediately released. The second person was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

HARTFORD (AP) A man wanted for alleged robbery in Connecticut jumped off a highway in Hartford and fell 70 feet Wednesday night while fleeing police an incident that prompted an investigation into the use of force by West Hartford officers.
State police said the man was taken to a hospital after jumping off an elevated portion of Interstate 84. The man s name and condition have not been released.
Hartford prosecutors asked state police to investigate a “potential use of force incident,” state police said in a statement Thursday. Details of what type of force the officers may have used have not been released.
