WEST FARGO During the first week of April, thieves stole about 90 catalytic converters from vehicles in West Fargo.
Between Nov. 1 and March 31, Fargo police received reports of about 130 catalytic converter thefts, and across the Red River in Moorhead, police have seen dozens of similar crimes in recent months.
The local crimes follow a wave of similar thefts across the region and the nation as prices for precious metals, which catalytic converters utilize to help control emissions, have soared.
(West Fargo, ND) It s a serious issue WDAY Radio and West Fargo Police hope to solve.
From April 1st, 2020, to April 8th, 2021, thieves stole 90 catalytic converter from vehicles in West Fargo. The West Fargo Police Department’s Community Outreach Programs and Services Unit, The Jay Thomas Show on AM 970 WDAY and FM 93.1 and Dave’s West Fargo Tire and Service are teaming up to help stop these thefts.
Residents can make appointments between 8 a.m. and noon Saturday, April 24th, to have their catalytic converters marked with heat resistant paint at Dave’s West Fargo Tire and Service (1225 Main Avenue East). This is a free service that will help deter thieves from taking the converters and selling them for valuable precious metals. Most scrapyards or shops will not buy converters that are marked or painted. This is a big indicator that the converter is stolen.
(West Fargo, ND) More appointments for West Fargo residents to get their vehicle’s catalytic converter marked are now available noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, April 25th.
Most scrapyards or shops will not buy converters with paint or marks because it is a sign it is stolen. The original appointments, which are set to take place Saturday, April 24th, filled two hours after announcing the initiative Tuesday.
Appointments are required, so to sign up click this link, or go here and click the Service Alert button at the top of the page.
The initiative brought about due to 90 catalytic converter thefts in West Fargo being reported over the past calendar year.
