The pandemic has been terrible in a hundred ways but wonderful in one particular instance: It allowed us to experience a Philadelphia nearly empty of cars.
Without the noise and exhaust of daily traffic in the first months of the lockdown, birdsong became the score of city life, and the air took on a country freshness. Center City’s streets turned into jogging courses, cyclists sped across town without fear of being sideswiped, and full-service restaurants sprouted from empty parking spaces.
According to KYW, Carroll said MLK Drive can t reopen to vehicles right away because the city has been conducting repairs to the road since its closure last March.
City workers still have to pave and stripe the roadway, improve flood mitigation and clean up the trails before vehicles can return, Carroll said. Improvements to lighting fixtures have also been made along MLK Drive as well, according to 6ABC. All renovations to MLK Drive are expected to be completed by the end of July.
The city will continue to close the roadway for weekend recreational use through the end of October. Opportunities to extend such closures are being explored. Adjustments to the configuration of MLK Drive are under review, too.
MLK Drive will reopen in August
Starting later this summer, for the first time since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Philadelphia motorists will be allowed to use Martin Luther King Drive for the first time.
Mike Carroll, deputy director of the Office of Transportation, Infrastructure and Sustainability, told the city council at a budget hearing on Monday that approximately 4 miles of road will be reopened to cars in the first week of August. WHYY report.
according to Kentucky, Carroll said that MLK Drive could not be reopened to vehicles immediately because the city has been carrying out road repairs since the city. Closed last March.
