A grammar school is set to welcome a new headteacher with a “track record of sustained success”, it has been announced. Andrew Cooper will take up his new job at Westcliff High School for Girls in September following the departure of current head Dr Paul Hayman. Mr Cooper has 30 years’ experience in teaching and leadership in a wide variety of schools and has a strong track record of raising standards across schools. He has also been appointed the chief executive officer of South East Essex Academy Trust, which currently includes the grammar school and three other schools. He said: “I am delighted to have the opportunity to lead both Westcliff High School for Girls and South East Essex Academy Trust and proud to lead a team of passionate, dedicated and talented staff and wonderful young people.

Student Bettine Harris has been awarded the British Youth Sailor Of The Year 2020 accolade by the British Yachting Awards.
The ceremony was hosted by Sailing Today with Yachts & Yachting group editor, Rob Peake, and winners of the awards were announced on December 3.
Bettine, an A-level student at The Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar, started her sailing career at Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club at the age of seven.
She has represented Great Britain in America, Italy, Spain and Portugal in top-level championships.
Westcliff High School for Girls is the lead school at the South East Essex Academy Trust. Now, discussions are taking place for the Deanes School, in Thundersley, Westcliff’s Westborough School and the Hadleigh Junior School to all join the multi-academy Trust. As well as Westcliff High School for Girls, the trust includes Prince Avenue Academy and Nursery, Holt Farm Junior School and Rochford Primary School. Desi McKeown, headteacher of the Deanes School, is pleased to be on the brink of joining the trust. He said: “I am really pleased that Deanes is being considered as a new member of the South East Essex Academy Trust.
