Player welfare is a key focus for the Papua New Guinea Hunters rugby league team as they begin a two week spell in hotel quarantine.
Hunters coach Matt Church said the players were making a big sacrifice moving away from their friends and family.

The Hunters have relocated to Australia so they can continue competing in the Queensland Cup, after last year s competition was cancelled because of Covid-19.
Coach Matt Church said it was a huge sacrifice for the whole squad to uproot their lives and move to a new country. It s never easy leaving home so I m sure the group, while excited about the challenges and the opportunities that lie ahead, they were also (feeling) a bit of trepidation for them leaving friends and family for such a long period of time.
The PNG Hunters will be based in Queensland for the 2021 season.

The club was forced to delay their departure by one week after a request to isolate and train together at a facility on the Gold Coast was denied.
Thirty players and six management staff will spend two weeks in managed isolation at a Brisbane hotel before moving to their permanent base at Runaway Bay to prepare for the 2021 Intrust Super Cup competition. It s great news for us all to finally get the approval for the SP Hunters players and officials to travel to Queensland, said PNG Rugby Football League acting CEO Stanley Hondina.

Member for Kagua-Erave, Wesley Raminai, in a statement thanked Prime Minister, James Marape, for appointing him with the Ministerial responsibility over Higher Education and Sports.
“It has been such a long time since the people of Kagua-Erave have had the honour and privilege of having their MP serve in the highest decision-making body of executive government.
“I’m humbled by the confidence shown by PM Marape in selecting me over many of my equally capable colleagues to serve in this high office.” Said Minister Raminai.
With COVID-19 wrecking the economy this year and causing disruption to the operations of many tertiary and technical institutions and sporting programs being cancelled or reduced, Raminai added that responsibilities over Higher Education and Sports would be challenging, especially as the pandemic persists.
