A library book that's only been checked out twice since its purchase in 2018 will remain available at Greeley Central High School after undergoing Greeley-Evans School District 6's book review process. Though "The God of Small Things" by Arundhati Roy has received little attention from students, more than 150 people signed forms in 2022 saying they wanted it banned or restricted from local school libraries.
"Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" was located in libraries at Northridge and Greeley Central high schools and at Brentwood Middle School as of early May. "The Kite Runner" was available at Northridge, Greeley Central and Greeley West high schools as of the review dated May 22.
Written by Sherman Alexie and published in 2009, "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" was among the top 10 banned books in 2022 according to the American Library Association.
"What you thought about the process, any feedback for future appeals," Pilch said, adding appeals have been filed on “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian," which was the second book evaluated by the book review committee.
The committee did not find the book to be "pervasively vulgar," according to the recommendation written by retired assistant superintendent Wes Tuttle, who is one of the committee's facilitators of the review process.
