Lynchburg police officer found justified in shooting at man, killing dog

BY RACHEL MAHONEY The (Lynchburg) News & Advance LYNCHBURG — A Lynchburg Police Department officer who shot at a man while trying to take him into custody during a mental health episode, killing a dog the man was holding, was justified in his actions, a prosecutor has determined. Multiple officers responded to the Cherrywood Suites extended-stay apartments off Holcomb Path Road the night of Feb. 25 for at least two calls about a man who was having a mental health episode, according to statements from police and an investigation report released Tuesday. One of the callers had just ended a relationship with the man, the report states, and officers determined that the man was under the influence of multiple drugs, had bladed weapons in the apartment, had a history of violence and had recently become paranoid after he stopped taking psychiatric medications.

Moneta woman sentenced in fatal 2019 DUI crash

BEDFORD — A Moneta woman will serve just under three years behind bars after being sentenced Friday in connection with an August 2019 DUI crash that killed a man. Brandi Michelle Credille, 36, pleaded no contest in September 2020 to charges of involuntary manslaughter, felony child neglect and misdemeanor driving under the influence. Credille was driving north on Moneta Road, near the Moneta Post Office, in the late morning of Aug. 8, 2019, when her vehicle swerved across the center lane and hit William Lee Keeney’s truck as he was headed south, Bedford Commonwealth’s Attorney Wes Nance said at the September hearing. Lynchburg-area attorneys anticipate heavy caseloads, shifts as jury sentencing rule nears end in Virginia

With jury trials suspended this month throughout most of the greater Lynchburg area because of the coronavirus pandemic, a backlog of those cases has been building — and those involved will be some of the last whose sentence is legally required to be jury-recommended. Virginia legislators passed a law last year that will take away the requirement for sentencing by a jury after they convict someone starting July 1. It’s something of a landmark: Virginia was the first state to enact jury sentencing in 1796, with some states following suit but several abandoning the process in the 1970s and ’80s. Five other states give juries sentencing power today.
