the reunification of the 2 germany s just 30 years ago to this day there was a concert held just behind me of beethoven s 3rd symphony and at the end of that concerts the conductor said the wall has to go and there was a huge cheer and the crowd went out onto the streets in impromptu protests which at that time were still very brave we re talking just months after the massacres at tiananmen square in beijing people didn t know what was going to happen and people also didn t realize that just 4 days later the wall was going to fall now that wasn t the 1st time that the gets a mini church played a role in the peace movement that led up to that event the church in general here in east germany was a sort of opposition force to the government which was officially atheist and it was a space where people could come together and talk frankly about politics and organize themselves and in the month particularly that led up to the fall of the berlin wall
night the 9th of november 1909 the unthinkable happened east germany s communist regime open the border the announcement allowed its citizens to safety cross to the west for the 1st time in 3 decades now in all those years crossing without permission was often fatal hundreds of people were killed trying to escape the country but with the burden rolled down friends and family could finally reunite without fear paving the way for the 2 germany to do the same not last or. and for more on the celebrations this week let s talk to our reporter david leavitt s who is out and about in berlin for us welcome david where are you and why . hey how and i m in front of the good seaman the church in what was just 30 years ago communist east berlin and i m here because this church played a major role in the peaceful revolution that led to the fall of the berlin wall and
the space behind me it was a sea of candles it was filled with candles people holding vigil for protestors program pro-democracy protesters who had been arrested and were being held in prison by the regime and that movement started pretty small at 1st there were only about 50 people who came but soon there were thousands and they weren t just church members they weren t just people who identified themselves as political this became very much a public movement let s have a look at those events from 30 years ago. in october 989 think if 70 church in what was then east berlin became the center of the revolution communist east germany was celebrating its. 30th anniversary and there was still rousing applause for the country s leaders but at the same time the streets were slowly filling up with protesters. and. east german police and members of the country s notorious intelligence service
brutally beat the demonstrators. on this night thousands some of them wounded fled into the safety of the church there were fears that the church would be storm. but the police didn t intervene a new wind was blowing from the east under mikhail gorbachev moscow was no longer willing to back the use of force against demonstrators the protest movement based in the guest them in the church was allowed to continue with candles courage and nonviolent protests these demonstrators paved the way for the peaceful revolution and the fall of the wall. so david a truly historic place and as we come back to you i think i can see some lights down thing across that church now what can we expect that is the thing.
