Ohio Auditor: Wendell Young indictment ‘step toward holding elected officials accountable’ Cincinnati City Council member Wendell Young (FOX19 NOW/file) By Jennifer Edwards Baker | April 19, 2021 at 12:01 PM EDT - Updated April 19 at 12:01 PM CINCINNATI, OH (FOX19) - Ohio Auditor Keith Faber said Monday the indictment of Cincinnati City Councilman Wendell Young “is a step toward holding elected officials accountable.” “Ohioans deserve transparency in their governments and I’m proud of the experienced law enforcement arm of our office, the Special Investigative Unit, who brought this crime to light,” Faber said in his first remarks since Young was indicted. Meanwhile, an investigation by Faber’s Special Investigative Unit within the state auditor’s office remains ongoing and will not be available until it’s closed, a spokeswoman for the office said Monday.

After indictment, some call for Wendell Young to resign

In the wake of Cincinnati City Councilman Wendell Young s indictment Thursday on a felony charge of tampering with evidence, two Republican council members are calling on the Democrat to resign so council can focus on city business without distraction. Republican Councilwoman Betsy Sundermann said:  Council member Young must resign immediately so we can focus on the real issues impacting Cincinnati. . the people of our city deserve much better than this revolving door of corruption.” Republican Councilwoman Liz Keating said:  Today is another sad day for Cincinnati. While Councilmember Young is entitled to his day in court, I hope he will step down to remove the distractions and mistrust at City Hall in order for Council to move forward with the important work we have in front of us.

Cincinnati City Councilman Wendell Young charged in texting scandal

Cincinnati City Councilman Wendell Young has been indicted on a single charge stemming from a three-year-old texting scandal. A Hamilton County grand jury on Thursday charged Young with tampering with records, a third-degree felony punishable by up to three years in prison. In a statement, Patrick Hanley, the special prosecutor who has been investigating Young for more than a year, said that between January and October of 2018, Young knowingly and with the purpose to defraud, destroyed text messages that belonged to a government entity.   Hanley told The Enquirer this marks the end of his investigation into the Gang of Five case. None of the other four council members accused of illegally texting with each other will be criminally charged.
