Wales is bringing in tougher rules on Christmas get-togethers and will enter its third lockdown on December 28 after coronavirus escalated ‘beyond crisis point’.
In a dramatic break with the UK-wide approach, Wales’s Labour-run administration will change the law so just two households can mix rather than three.
First Minister Mark Drakeford also said the nation would go back into lockdown once the five-day Christmas relaxation of rules is over.
Wales currently has the highest infection rate in the UK – 425 per 100,000 people – with eight of the top ten worst-hit areas.
Mr Drakeford said one in five people in Wales is testing positive for the virus, while more than 2,100 are in hospital with symptoms. A record 98 are in intensive care.
Confidence in the Welsh government has nosedived since leader Mark Drakeford decided to ban alcohol in pubs to combat a Covid-19 surge, a new survey revealed today.
Trust in the First Minister s personal handling of the pandemic also plummeted in the space of just a month, going from net positive to net negative.
The Welsh Labour-led administration imposed new rules on December 4 which forced pubs, bars, restaurants and cafes to stop selling alcohol and to shut by 6pm, sparking criticism from the public and opposition politicians.
The YouGov poll, published today, said 47 per cent of people now think the government is doing a bad job, a rise of 19 percentage points from the 28 per cent who said so in November before the new rules came in.
THE Welsh Government has been accused of leaking information after a national radio station reported Wales could be heading for a post-Christmas firebreak lockdown. Yesterday LBC reported claims Wales will be placed into some kind of lockdown again after a five-day reprieve from December 23 to 27. Welsh Conservative shadow health minister Andrew RT Davies said the Welsh Government should shed light on the situation as soon as possible, while ministers said they were keeping all measures under review. LBC is reporting that ministers are considering a second firebreak for Monday, December 28, while a tiered system like that introduced in England is also reportedly being discussed.
