Maine high school grads reflect on COVID pandemic learning milestones

Patience. Independence. Adaptability. Gratitude. Acceptance. Some people need their whole lives to learn these things. Others learn them sooner, rather than later. And then there are some who learn them even earlier than most. When it comes to that last group, graduates of the Class of 2021 come to mind. As their junior year wound down and their senior year started up, they were hit with something a whole lot more surprising than some pop quiz. They were confronted with the COVID-19 pandemic, a subject unlike those with which their predecessors in recent generations had to contend. In addition to math, science, English and history, the graduates of Wells, Sanford and Kennebunk high schools took crash courses in sacrifice, perseverance, the unexpected, and, quite frankly, grave matters of health and safety. They did not receive grades in these crash courses, but they received life lessons that will serve them moving forward.

Varsity Maine Spotlight: Savannah Grover, Wells

Varsity Maine Spotlight: Savannah Grover, Wells A left-handed pitcher with a nasty screwball, she is the only returning player with varsity experience for the Warriors softball team. Shawn Patrick Ouellette/Staff Photographer Savannah Grover is especially pleased to be playing softball for Wells High this spring. Not only has she had to contend with COVID-19 restrictions throughout the school year, she also is recovering from a severe knee injury suffered in February 2020 while playing travel softball. And while Grover hasn’t been completely cleared for all physical activities – she can only pitch and bat for three innings – she’s become a leader for a young Warriors team. With the 2020 spring season canceled because of the pandemic, she is the only player returning from 2019 with any varsity experience.

Relatively traditional graduations planned for Sanford, Wells, ME

SANFORD, Maine – When it comes to the upcoming graduation of Sanford High’s Class of 2021, the goal is to have a commencement ceremony that is “as close to back to normal as we can get,” Principal Matthew Petermann said Tuesday. That would mean a commencement at Alumni Stadium, this time on Wednesday, June 9, with graduating Spartans marching onto the field as their families and friends watch from the stands, with speeches given from the podium, diplomas handed out on stage, and the usual pomp and circumstance. Even the starting time would be the same as previous years: 6 p.m. “We want to give them something they can remember and walk away from and be proud of,” Petermann said.
