Sky Stadium chief executive Shane Harmon says the decision to revoke hosting rights for the capital’s two All Blacks test matches was “another casualty in another brutal year of events”. (File photo) Sky Stadium chief executive Shane Harmon said while he was aware of the possibility the tests might be moved over the past few days, the final decision – which he described as “one of the unavoidable consequences of Covid” – wasn’t delivered until Tuesday morning. “It’s just been another casualty in another brutal year of events and frankly, none of this has been a surprise given the number of cancellations we’ve had to date.
Julian Savea has scored two tries to make him the Hurricanes all-time top scorer.
Befitting a big Friday night out in Wellington, the Hurricanes sparked up, got the staggers, then rode the No 14 bus home. Led by a double from Julian ‘The Bus’ Savea which saw him overtake Christian Cullen and TJ Perenara as the Hurricanes’ record tryscorer, the hosts held off a feisty Melbourne Rebels by 35-13 at Sky Stadium. Savea’s fourth try in a fortnight of Super Rugby Trans-Tasman moved him to 57 for his career, past Cullen and Perenara’s mark of 56 as the Hurricanes scored five tries and banked a second maximum point victory.

The father of a Wellington club rugby player was attacked and players subjected to “repeated vile racial slurs” by another club’s supporters before a fight broke out after a match on Saturday, according to Marist St Pats chairman Rob Evans.
The match between MSP and Old Boys University clubs at Wellington College was marred by a brawl in the final minutes, which Evans said involved players and spectators.
Wellington Rugby is investigating the brawl, which Evans said involved allegations of racial and physical abuse towards its players by OBU supporters and ex-players.
“It is clear some of our players became upset following repeated, vile racial slurs and the attack on the father of one of our players by an intoxicated group of OBU supporters. Just as violence cannot be tolerated, the kind of racial abuse witnessed on Saturday has no place in our game or society,” Evans said.
