Joann D. Eldridge, 81, passed away Jan. 26, of Merkel cell carcinoma

Wicked Local Joann D. Eldridge, 81, passed away in the early morning hours on Jan. 26, 2021, of Merkel cell carcinoma. She leaves behind her life partner of 38 years, Ruth Ostenson, and her beloved Ragdoll kitty, Luna. Joann was born on August 31, 1939 in Milford, to Joe and Ethel Eldridge. She spent her early years in Worcester, until her parents moved to the Sagamore/Buzzard’s Bay area. Joann attended Bourne Grammar School and Bourne High School, graduating in 1957. She often traveled with her father up and down the East Coast waterways, as he was a sports fisherman. Because of his tutelage, Joann entered a state-wide fishing contest at age10 and won first prize, traveling to the Massachusetts State House to receive her award.

MLK holiday: Wellfleet walk and art event spreads to anywhere, anytime

The annual celebration of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. that usually fills the center of Wellfleet has no boundaries this year. Organizers from the artpeacemakers group that has for 19 years presented the WalKING Meditation and related activities had talked from the start about potentially spreading out their commemoration of the holiday that honors King’s life. Did they want, Harriet Korim says, to “share the recipe for a non-religious observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, focusing on creativity and family-friendliness, far and wide”? For 2021, the COVID-19 pandemic made the decision for them. While Candace Perry says she and other organizers are disappointed that safety concerns won’t allow them to gather people together as usual, “we are planning many other activities.” Korim notes in a phone interview that “for artists, limitations are often the spark of new ideas.”

In adjusting to survive the COVID-19 pandemic, Cape and Islands arts organizations may have found a way forward in 2021

Editor s note: This is part of a series of 10 stories on a variety of topics that take a look back at 2020 and forward to 2021. Many policies and practices were changed or adjusted because of the pandemic or other disruptions and we look at how those changes will shape the future.  As the impossibility of gathering in 2020 devastated so much of the arts and entertainment industry this year, from movies to concerts and theater performances, there was debate over who deserved financial help from the government. The debate left some skeptics to ponder a big question:  Are the arts really essential?
