New director named at Kingwood Center Gardens

New director named at Kingwood Center Gardens After a national search, Josh Steffen was selected as the next executive leader at the public garden, only the fifth director since Kingwood’s opening in 1953. He will begin on June 14 following the retirement of Chuck Gleaves, who has served in that role for 23 years. Steffen brings a broad scope of both education and experience with him. Most recently he held the position of horticulture and facilities manager at the Wellfield Botanic Gardens in Elkhart, Indiana, according to a news release from Kingwood. Work in Creston and Cleveland Prior to his leadership position there, he was a softscape foreman at Stoney Creek Landscaping in Creston, Ohio, and the Hershey Children’s Garden manager at the Cleveland Botanical Garden. He is skilled in project and staff management, exhibit and landscape design, organizational capacity building and stakeholder engagement, according to the news release.

Oak Farm prairie restoration receives NIPSCO grant

MERRILL — Oak Farm Montessori School in Avilla is the recipient of a $4,000 Environmental Action Grant from NIPSCO for its prairie and oak woodland restoration project. NIPSCO recently announced recipients of its 2021 Environmental Action Grant program, awarded to 18 local organizations that applied for the funding earlier this year. In its sixth year, NIPSCO’s Environmental Grant has donated $370,000 to date, helping 92 projects come to fruition across Northern Indiana. This year’s projects include multiple wetland restoration projects, launch of Conservation Buddies at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northeast Indiana, continued support of pollinator habitats and corresponding education programs, a restoration project at Fulton County’s Richland Restoration Nature Park and support of a Smithsonian exhibit about water/ways in Kosciusko County. Additionally, support includes several projects at the Indiana Dunes, Indiana’s National Park.
