In an effort to inspire students to embark on a health career in rural New Zealand the Rural Health Careers Promotion Programme has been touring South Canterbury schools this week.
More young people were needed in the health and wellbeing sector to combat shortages, she said. The New Zealand aged care sector employs 33,000 people with demand expected to increase by 50 to 75 per cent due to the ageing population over the next 15 years, according to Careerforce, the industry training organisation for the health and wellbeing sectors.

Sisson said some of the students decided they would like to volunteer at some of the facilities represented. Five stations ranging from diversional therapy to Healthcare NZ which offers a home community support were available with representatives able to answer questions at the Timaru event.
