I think we will go in and get started. I know we got a lot of ground to cover, a lot of questions that people will want to ask. Some of you have contacted me before hand to launch your request. It afternoon everybody and welcome to this council on Foreign Relations meeting on the u. S. China relations. Im evan osnos from the new yorker and the Brookings Institution or im thrilled to be joined by three of my favorite scholar practitioners and theyll introduce them in a second buffer zone what you commended them for agreeing to wait into one of the most complex and pressing questions, foreignpolicy questions before us, and that of course is a question of whether beijing and washington can avert the pressure towards confrontation, the pressure of history, the patterns of history that drive a ruling power and a rising power into confrontation. And then even the harder question which will also do with, and that is what do we do about it . A couple of housekeeping notes at the very beginning
Spreads knowledge and the possibility of greater understanding between peoples, it also empowers terrorists who spread hatred and death, most recently in orlando and istanbul. The world is more prosperous than ever before. But alongside globalization and technological wonders, we also see a rising inequality, and wage stagnation across the advanced economies, leaving too many workers in communities fearful of diminishing prospects, not just for themselves, but more importantly for their children. And in the face of such rising uncertainty, it is not enough to look at aggregate growth rates or stock prices or the pace of digital innovation. If the benefits of globalization accrue only to those at the very top, if our democracies seem incapable of assuring broadbased growth and opportunity for everyone, then people will push back, out of anger, or out of fear. And politicians, some sincere and some entirely cynical, will tap that anger and fear. Harkening back to bygone days of order and
He and other p. O. W. S used to communicate. Every night they tapped out goodnight and God Bless America from their cells to each other. When you knew the man in the cell next to you was down and hurting his feet locked and ankle cuffs at the foot of the concrete slab come his hands cuffed tightly behind him, he had been like that for a week or a month, you get up to your wall frequently and you tapped to him gb and he knew that meant god bless. He knew that it also meant to be tough, hang in there. I am praying for you. And then in a week or a month or whenever hed be up on his wall to encourage you in the same way for example on the p. O. I would like to leave you this morning with a p. O. W. Message. At the end of every day we would sign off and say goodnight. G anne for goodnight. Gba. God bles

On gaining information into the brexit exit. So youre very welcome, i know this is your second gig in two days and that you have told the house of the European Union yesterday on it was a particular pleasure. Which i hope to repeat today. Is that the reason you chose to sit at that end of the building . I did not even do the scheduling. Between your clocks in my office. I dont imagine it was with our clocks. You made some pen a decision to go there first. But that is the general hook that i want to take into my next question which is to examine your assessment of the legal and parliamentary implications of the brexit.
