Malawi President Eyes Mining as Key Money Maker - New Delhi Times - India s Only International Newspaper

May 4, 2021 Share Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has announced plans to reform the country’s mining sector to boost the economy and crack down on rampant, illegal mining and mineral smuggling.  Chakwera said, if properly regulated, mining could play a major role in Malawi’s economy, currently one of the poorest in Africa. Malawi’s president, in a national television address late Sunday, said a well-regulated mining sector has the potential to develop the country’s economy. Lazarus Chakwera noted that despite a lot of mineral resources in Malawi, the sector has faced exploitation not only by foreigners but also local miners.

Escom officials in a meeting with Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change BLANTYRE-(MaraviPost) In a clear display of arrogance, Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) went ahead with their greedy decision to hike electricity tariffs despite Malawi Energy Regulation Authority (Mera) advising them to put the adjustment on hold. This has been revealed during an interface with the Parliamentary Committee on Natural Resources and Climate Change today Tuesday 27th April, 2021. According to Welani Chilenga, the committee’s chairperson, Escom officials told him earlier that the increase was made to bail out the institution from its financial quagmire, and based on the minister of energy’s statement in parliament.

Parliament rejects motion to debate Termination of Pregnancy Bill

The motion to debate the bill was moved by Chitipa MP, Welani Chilenga. Despite the rejection concerned youths have gathered outside Parliament- a distance away from the entrance in support of the motion. Security officers have not allowed the youths to stand at the entrance of the Parliament. “They will not intimidate us…we are here and we are not going anywhere” said Jessica Mandanda one of the youths. And Chimwemwe Mlombwa from She Decides Malawi added: “Although am pleased that Hon. Ngwale is the one to present the motion, I am shocked and disappointed that the 43 women in Parliament did not see this as a maternal health issue as we are losing lives of women every single day”
