Hancock Commission supports Solid Waste Authority | News, Sports, Jobs

(Photo by Craig Howell) NEW CUMBERLAND The Hancock County Commission will provide some assistance to the county Solid Waste Authority, and has agreed to consider various other funding requests, following its meeting Thursday. The county Solid Waste Authority, in a letter from Chairman Mark Vignovic, had requested $15,000 from the commission. “This is for their operations,” Commission President Paul Cowey noted. The Hancock County Solid Waste Authority was created in 1989 by the state Legislature, with the mission of developing a comprehensive program for solid waste collection, processing, recycling and disposal for county residents.

Jan 25, 2021 The city of Weirton soon will join others around the state including Wheeling in collecting license plate information from vehicles. The tool is designed to help law enforcement solve crimes and put together patterns by tracking license plate information. However, there are concerns with how the data can be used. The devices will be installed into three of the city’s cruisers, and, while in use, can actively scan any license plate within their view. If the license number comes up as being connected to an active case, it will alert the officer. According to Weirton Police Chief W. Charles Kush, the goal with utilizing the readers is to focus on criminal and felony investigations, with the alerts set to include information on active warrants and searches from law enforcement agencies.

Danny was born March 9, 1944, in Urichsville, OH., the son of the late Charles and Beulah Staneart Minor. He was also preceded in death by his wife Sherrie Lynn Minor on June 20, 2017, and his sister, Judy Miller. Danny worked for the former Weirton Steel Corporation for thirty years, retiring as a security guard. He was well-versed in law enforcement, spending a combined ten years with the City of Weirton Police Department and the Hancock Sheriff’s office. Additionally, he enjoyed working for the County of Hancock as a bailiff in the court system, receiving his appointment by former Hancock County Sheriff Ralph Fletcher. Without a doubt, his most immense joy throughout his life was spending time with his wife Sherrie spreading the good news of Christ over fifty years through their music ministry. WEIRTON An investigation is ongoing following a single-vehicle crash in the city early Wednesday. Weirton Police reported a call shortly after 3 a.m. of a single-vehicle crash on Cove Road, near Kusic Street. The 2016 Ford Fusion was traveling east when it left the right side of the roadway, went down an embankment and struck a tree, officers reported. The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene. A male passenger was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital, in critical, but stable, condition. Neither individual was wearing a seatbelt, according to officials. No names or other information is being released, pending notification of families.
