Semaglutide, sold under the brand names Ozempic and Rybelsus, helped most people with obesity in a clinical trial lose at least 10 percent of their body weight, and more than half of them reduced their weight by at least 15 percent, according to the study results, which were published in February 2021 in the The study focused on a once-weekly injection of semaglutide at a higher dose than is approved for treatment of type 2 diabetes. The drug’s manufacturer, Novo Nordisk, is now seeking approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to sell a weekly injected version of the medication as a weight loss aid.
