Jean Weidner Goldstein, one of the co-chairs of the campaign to raise funds for a major renovation to the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens master plan, has made a $1 million gift to the project.
The endowment gift will go to Innovating a Greener Future – Living Inspiration for The Living Museum: The Campaign for Selby Gardens. Selby Gardens is an extraordinary garden of international stature, not only for its world-class collections, but for the master plan, Goldstein said in a statement. The sustainability features of this master plan will solidify Selby Gardens as a leader in sustainability worldwide.
Selby Gardens has raised more than $35 million, or about 80% of the $42.5 million needed to launch the first phase of the new master plan, and a groundbreaking ceremony is planned on June 3.

The company said Goldstein’s gift will support the company overall as it continues to grow. It also will provide support for the training of young dancers through the Margaret Barbieri Conservatory for pre-professional classical dancers and the high school drop-out prevention program, Dance – The Next Generation. Each year, Dance – The Next Generation provides more than 150 students with free dance training.
“Jean has dedicated so much to this organization,” said Director Iain Webb. “This amazing gift will give us another way to protect and cherish not only her beloved company, but also her legacy in the future. Her vision not only started the Ballet, but will also look after its success in the years to come.”
