Basketball was not a well funded sport, and with the trip expected to cost about $1000 per player, the hope was to reduce the cost to families as much as possible, team manager Scott Bradley said. “When guys make rep teams they pretty much have to fund themselves . If you’re a talented sportsman your parents might fork out five to 10 grand a year just to get you where you need to go.” Getting the chance to play on a national stage was a big opportunity for young players, he said. “They’re talented kids, they’re future Nelson Giants, and they need to be seen at a national tournament. If you don’t get to go to a tournament like this you don’t get to know how good you are.”
