Arbor Day tradition continues at Wooster City Schools

WOOSTER  Blake Wright forgot to grab his magnolia tree sapling, set outside for the fifth graders at Edgewood Middle School. He instead rushed up the road to Kean Elementary to celebrate Arbor Day with his sister, Lillie, a first-grader, who received a dogwood sapling. Blake remembered receiving his dogwood sapling as a first-grader, although he couldn’t remember if he planted it. His sister was excited to be taking home her tree, part of a Wooster City Schools tradition that started in the late 1950s. Arbor Day is celebrated across the United States, usually on the last Friday in April. It’s an environmental holiday established in Nebraska City, Nebraska, in 1872, almost 100 years before the first Earth Day. It’s commonly celebrated by planting trees.
