Sheriff s Office identifies suspect arrested in south Laredo raid March 3, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail Chaires/ The Webb County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man arrested during a raid that caused the lockdown of Santo Niño Elementary in south Laredo. Authorities identified the suspect as Ernesto Chaires, 21. He was charged with possession of marijuana, a Class B misdemeanor punishable with up to 180 days in jail, a $2,000 fine or both. On Feb. 25, the Sheriff’s Office along with its SWAT team executed a narcotics search warrant at a residence in the 2600 block of Napoleon Street. During the execution of the warrant, investigators discovered a usable quantity of marijuana inside a clear plastic bag inside the bedroom of Chaires, according to the affidavit.

Search called off for alleged marijuana smuggler who tried to swim into Mexico Feb. 19, 2021 FacebookTwitterEmail State police have called off the search for an alleged marijuana smuggler who tried to swim into Mexico following a vehicle pursuit in El Cenizo, authorities said. A Texas Department of Public Safety spokesperson confirmed that the search for the man was called off last week. DPS in conjunction with the U.S. Border Patrol, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens, Webb County Sheriff’s Office and the DPS tactical marine searched for the alleged suspect to no avail. The case was reported at about 6:30 p.m. Feb. 10 when a trooper tried to pull over a 2005 Ford Pickup traveling south on mile marker 724 of U.S. 83.
