It did deposit the first accumulating snow of the season for many between midmorning and early afternoon Wednesday, with amounts exceeding totals from all of last winter in some spots. But because of mild air rushing over the region from the Atlantic, the snow changed to a nasty mix of sleet, freezing rain and plain old rain from Interstate 95 to the east. That mild air foiled any chance of a blockbuster snowstorm of the likes seen in northern Pennsylvania, south central New York and Vermont, where more than 40 inches fell in a few locations. (CIRA/RAMMB) A powerful and complex winter storm is moving through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, bringing up to two feet of snow to inland areas in Pennsylvania, New York State, and much of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts as well. Meanwhile, the big cities of Washington and Philadelphia will be sitting right on the dividing line between precipitation types, making for a messy mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and possibly, cold rain as the storm intensifies and moves along the East Coast.
