It did deposit the first accumulating snow of the season for many between midmorning and early afternoon Wednesday, with amounts exceeding totals from all of last winter in some spots. But because of mild air rushing over the region from the Atlantic, the snow changed to a nasty mix of sleet, freezing rain and plain old rain from Interstate 95 to the east. That mild air foiled any chance of a blockbuster snowstorm of the likes seen in northern Pennsylvania, south central New York and Vermont, where more than 40 inches fell in a few locations.
