that press conference went on so long i sometimes forgot that mitch mcconnell was standing there. nbc s peter alexander was inside that news conference in the white house rose garden. nbc s garrett haake is on capitol hill. we have the chief white house correspondent for the new york times peter baker and msnbc political analyst, jonathan lamier. peter, there was so much in that press conference, so many different statements that need some context. i particularly am interested in him saying that cuba is responsible for those sound attacks on our american diplomats. we hadn t heard that before from any government official. but let s start with mitch mcconnell, because that s the reason this news conference happened. the two of them had lunch today. give us a little insight about what they talked about and what they hoped to get done going forward. reporter: well, to be clear, this president we have described before as the great disruptor and this was certainly unlike anything i ha
members of the senate, what are the chances that the majority of the house are going to go for that. there s a whole other hurding. since the house has dealt with this and did get north of 218 votes. why don t we have the senate vote on that and put it on the record. it s frustrating to americans when they have legislation that they don t vote on it. if it gets voted down, it s voted down and goes back to the drawing board. if the senate would pass something, i think the house would be very, very open to actually endorsing that and voting for it and look, if you can pass something in the senate, then you have something in the house that you can actually go to conference and work out the differences, but the timeline is quickly. do you agree if something goes through the senate it could go one of two ways. we heard something from majority leader mitch mcconnell, we hadn t heard before. we may bring democrats on board.
this. let me bring the white house dynamic into this because the president thought the house bill was too mean and it sounds like in trump language rand paul wants to make it more mean. i think that that is a correct assessment and i think you re going to hear moderates say that the draft of this is too mean. i talked to a couple of them, senators murkowski and others out of the capitol. if they try to move this closer to the conservatives we ll push back really hard. but i do think at some point the president may have to weigh in one way or the other and i have a feeling the approach going to be similar i think part of the reason why he s been saying these things, at least based on my reporting, talking to members up here is he really wants a win on this. and this is what senators have been telling him they need for there to be a win. that they have needed the bill to be less mean. so we ll see if he starts to get on the phone. i asked lindsey graham if that had happened. graham
