to vote in the county will be safe. i wonder if your constituents in georgia sort of feel this more personally and more directly and mark utley than all of us to looking at it nationally? all my constituents, who i am proud to represent feel it. i have to tell, you i feel personally. my mother is from the part of the state. and i know a lot about coffee county. my mother was born and raised in we are counting. way across georgia nearby. and as you point out in your opening discussion, the people in georgia did an amazing thing on january 5th 2021. electing their first black united states senator. my, mom who s from we are counting, that part of the state who grew up picking somebody else s tobacco, if picking somebody else s cotton, picked her youngest son to be united states senator. that s what is at stake here. the ability of ordinary people have a voice in democracy.
people planning to go to the iowa republican caucuses. 57% who say they want somebody other than trump to be leading their party. 57% do not want him leading their party. while no other candidate gets to 20% in the same poll. what are republicans doing here? how do you feel of this guy? what do you plan on doing about it. every few hours we get a new law enforcement announcement of one or more of his followers threatening violence in his name. well he is leading by 20 plus points in the state s. and in those early, states voter said they do not want him. i mean talk about an unanswered question. talk about a mystery where we really don t know the answer. this is the soul of the country kind of moment. if a decision we gotta make. about who ought to be a contender. here about being a democracy.
humankind, democracy. i was struck by readings today of an event that happened this weekend in georgia. a bunch of different groups, including black voters matter met in coffee county. at the church in coffee county which of course is one of the locations that has become famous. because of the environment of president trump and his codefendants. coffee county is one of the places where people who should not have access to voting in tabulating hands were nonetheless given access in the sensitive data from those machines were uploaded on to the internet and downloaded over the world. people met in coffee county this weekend to top of the damage done to their democracy. and to try to reckon with why it has taken this long to fix it. why police were not involved sooner. weather has not necessarily been any assurance to people in the county that the next effort
or at least that hasn t sparked. and we should notice it. because of our crime scene, a proverbial counseling and our actual crime scene. we are not trying to forget who did it. we have no suspense, no question at all as to who the perpetrator is in this big alleged crime that is now at the center of the existential questions of whether our democracy is going to survive. whether we will keep having elections, whether candidates and political parties in the people at large are going to believe in the results of elections and agree to abide by the results of elections. we have no questions about who done it. from the fake electors scheme to leaning on state officials to get them to falsify the election results, to telling his mom to go march on the building where congress was just then certifying the election results. i mean there is no mystery at all for us. as to who did it. right? it s discuss, former president trump. that s what he has been charged with crimes in multiple
former presidents case. we have a problem. and we got a deal with it. which is why we need to pass the legislation i and others put forward on voting rights. we gotta preserve democracy. we got a pulled once again degree american covenant one person one vote. nothing could be more important. because the democracies the whole game. it is a framework in which we fight for all that matters and long after the case is over, the books are closed we will face one another. our children will ask us what did you do and moxie itself was in peril? and i want to be able to look my kids in the eye and say i stood up for the best american ideal. i stood up for the covenant we have with one another. it s interesting, warnock thank you so much for joining us tonight. i know there is a lot of pressure on the people and institutions of your state.
