personal integrity. but they will not go so far as to say congress should get involved. the message was clear it s the administration s problem, yes this person should resign but this is like an employee issue but we don t want to get involved. there was one exception and that s congressman mark meadows who is a close ally on the hill. he told me pretty early on he was exploring some options. he s the chair of the oversight subcommittee. but he didn t really know exactly how he could do that. i think he was just trying to kind of ally himself with the president and say well, we re looking into this. but even he didn t know quite how congress could do anything. i want to turn to you on the subject of president obama being back on the campaign trail. he was in anaheim yesterday for democratic candidates who were in districts hillary clinton won back in 2016. let s take a listen to some of what he had to say yesterday. if we don t step up, things can get worse. the good news is in two
and even though katie hill can t be here today [ inaudible ] local nurse and police officer, educating the public schools. now she is running to take the values of her community to washington. and make real change. so these are some of the men and women, many of them who never imagined running for office. what they understood is the stakes are high in this election. this is a consequential moment in our history. and the fact is that if we don t step up, things can get worse. when there is a vacuum in our democracy, when we are not participating, we re not paying
lighting rod. i think that the problem that president obama is going to have is he s going to talk about trying to be reasonable, we need to be serious and the hard left of the democrat party has gone off the rails. i mean, they are talking about impeachment, they are talking about you look at the kavanaugh hearings, the average american voter look at the democrats and say do we really want to give them power. i mean, that s going to be very motivational not only for republicans but for swing voters who are saying, do we really want to turn this over to democrats who are on this complete path of of, you know, left ward lurch or are we going to stick with the things that are working for us, tax cuts, the booming economy, job growth, i mean, those are the things that will play for republicans in november. eric: let s hear what former president obama said about the very thing. if we don t step up, things can t get worse. where there s a vacuum in our
of abortion this week during his confirmation hearings. but this time he said roe v. wade was an important precedent of the supreme court. republicans are expecting at least a few democrats to come over as well, targeting senators manchin, heitkamp and donnelly who are all up for reelection in states that president trump won, so at this point, g.o.p. leaders don t expect to have any problems getting kavanaugh confirmed and seated by the end of the month. jon? jon: garrett tenney in washington, thanks, garrett. after reentering the political arena in illinois on friday, former president barack obama gave another stump speech on behalf of democratic candidates today. this time in orange county, california. a traditional g.o.p. stronghold. but unlike yesterday, he did not mention president trump by name. the fact is that if we don t step up, things can get worse. where there s a vacuum in our democracy, when we are not
in our history. and the fact is that if we don t step up, things can get worse. this is a government for everybody! it s not for sale! that s what we believe in! now the former president believes democrats do have a chance to flip the house in november. jon? jon: any response from president trump or the white house so far so what the former president had to say? well, president trump was quick yesterday in firing back at obama saying the former president s speech on friday made him sleepy. this was in response to obama taking shots at the current administration where he said trump is a symptom, not the cause of the divisiveness in politics. our own chris wallace also sat down with vice president mike pence for an interview that will air on fox news sunday, and here is how the vice president responded when asked about obama s accusation of trump practicing the politics of fear and resentment. well, it was very
