Editorial: Study exposes Indiana s political imbalance
It s no secret that Indiana is, in political terms, a bright red state. The Republican Party has an iron grip on state government and in most local government entities.
What Hoosiers don t realize is how skewed its political district lines have become and the ends to which GOP leaders have gone to squeeze every bit of power it can from the map-drawing system.
In the 2020 elections for president, governor and attorney general, Republican candidates won their races with about 57% of the vote. Yet, the GOP holds about 73% of state House and Senate seats.

Editorial: Legislature not kind to unemployed
When the Legislature was entering its final days, Indiana lawmakers were particularly proud of themselves for providing record funding for education.
As we all know, or at least should, this record increase in funding came from the American Rescue Plan, an act of Congress signed into law by President Joe Biden and not supported by Republicans. It was the law that provided nearly $2 trillion in funding for a variety of programs, including $1,400 stimulus checks and billions of dollars of funding for state and local government.
Indiana, like all other states, received huge windfalls. Indiana ended up flush with cash and the Legislature used this money to shore up programs.

The most venerated automobile of all time is Henry Ford s Model T. Nicknamed Tin Lizzie, Leapin Lena, and sometimes Flivver, the Model T went into production
in 1908 and the last models rolled off the assembly line in 1927. The vehicle was a success everywhere in the world it was sold because it made owning a car affordable to the masses for the first time.
Senate Bill 200, authored by Sen. Mike Young, R-Indianapolis, “permits the attorney general to request the appointment of a special prosecuting attorney if a prosecuting attorney is categorically refusing to prosecute certain crimes.”
Although Young will claim otherwise, most people recognize the bill was filed primarily to try to overrule Marion County Prosecutor Ryan Mears’ decision to no longer prosecute people for possession of small amounts of marijuana.
That policy does not prevent prosecutions for larger amounts, dealing or other charges like driving while intoxicated.
While some states are legalizing recreational use of marijuana outright - with Virginia poised to maybe become the next - other states or localities have moved to reduce or even eliminate penalties on small-time users.
