Conviction rescinded in death of Michigan child who drowned in unsafe home Updated Feb 01, 2021; DETROIT – The involuntary manslaughter conviction of a Detroit woman who is already out on parole was overturned by the Michigan appeals court due to bad jury instructions at her trial, The Associated Press reports. Tonya Peterson, 31, was convicted and sentenced to prison in 2019 after a jury convicted her of involuntary manslaughter in the accidental drowning death of 11-month-old Ca’Mya Davis, the report said. In 2018, the child fell through a hole in a bedroom floor, landing in standing water and sewage in the home’s basement, the AP reports. Seven children were living in Peterson’s home, and no adults were present during the incident.
