Investigation under way into large fire that broke out at a West Coast ironsand mine site

Tom Lee/Stuff Several calls were made about a fire at the Taharoa iron sand mine on Friday morning (file photo). An investigation is under way into the cause of a fire that broke out in a Waikato West Coast mining site building. Multiple fire crews began battling the blaze after receiving a number of calls around 9.43am on Friday from the Taharoa iron sand mine. It took crews from Taharoa sands, Pirongia, Ōtorohanga, Kāwhai, Te Kūiti and Cambridge, as well as four pumps and four water tankers on site to contain the “well-involved” blaze. The fire has now been successfully put out and an investigation has begun, Taharoa Ironsands Limited Managing Director Wayne Coffey said.
