Wayne/White Electric Co-Op Offering Scholarships

The Wayne-White County Electric Cooperative for the 2nd year in a row will be awarding 10 $500 scholarships at their annual meeting. That meeting is set for June 9th at Wayne City High School. To be eligible, each student who enters must be the son or daughter of an active cooperative member. While sons or daughters of cooperative employees are ineligible, grandchildren are eligible. The scholarship recipients will be selected through a random drawing from all of the applications received. Only one application per student is permitted. The scholarship will be paid directly to the school on behalf of the winner. The Application Deadline is May 19th. Applications may be mailed to PO Drawer E Fairfield, IL 62837 or dropped off at the Wayne-White Coop office at Fairfield or Enfield during normal office hours. You may also fax them to 618-842-4497 or email aparrott@wwcec.com. Applications not in hand by 4 PM on Friday, May 12th will not be able to be considered. Link to the App

Fairfield Veterans Day Parade The Fairfield Veterans Day Parade will be held November 5th at 2:00. The day will begin with a breakfast at St. Edwards Catholic Church from 7-9 AM. The breakfast will be for all veterans and their spouses. Please call Dian Zurliene at 516-1808 to RSVP. Festivities will begin at 1:00 PM with a flag raising at Freedom Park. Elizabeth Gonzalez will sing the National Anthem, followed by a concert by the Roasted Chestnuts. Parade line up will start at 1:00 PM on North First Street and will line up as entries arrive from Court Street north toward North Side School on a first come, first served basis. 2 Semi trailers will be provided for the veterans to ride on. We would like to encourage everyone to come out to see the parade and honor our veterans. Following the parade there will be a meal for parade participants at the Fairfield Elks Club, sponsored by FNB. Headlines for Tuesday, October 18th

In a bizarre chain of events, the Village of West Salem is without a mayor and is also down one board member. However, Fire Chief Harvey Fenton who was fired last week by Mayor Dan Baker was reinstated by the Village Board at a special meeting that had been called for 5pm Monday night by then Mayor Baker, prior to him resigning earlier Monday citing concerns over the safety of village employees. A crowd of 100 concerned citizens attended the meeting held at the firehouse due to the size of the crowd. Board member Jeff Bradham was elected by the board to serve as member in charge for Monday night's meeting. Bradham told the group that all OSHA requirements had been met and a release was sent October 11th just hours before the firing of Chief Fenton. The vote was unanimous to reinstate Fenton as Fire Chief, however when board member Misty Mewes was asked for her vote she resigned from the board. Headlines for Monday, October 10th

The Fairfield City Council will hold their regular meeting on Tuesday, October 11 at 6:00pm at city hall, with a public hearing to take place prior to the meeting at 5:50pm. The public hearing is in regard to rezoning property at 1010 West Court & 110 NW 11th streets and bid opening for sale of city owned property. In routine business the council will discuss an ordinance for the sale of city owned property, for the auxiliary police building, and ordinance to rezone property from an R-2 to a B-3 Zone, ordinance for a TIF Agreement with B-Way Design & Decorating LLC, and an ordinance on risk management insurance. Other items on the agenda include a street closing request for the Christmas Parade to be held on December 3rd at 5:00pm, a request to use recreation funds for the Christmas Parade, and discussion/approval concerning a request for water line extension.
