Community Groups Help OKC Students With Supplies As They Head Back To The Classroom

Oklahoma City police and community members spent their Monday afternoon unloading school supplies and filling up backpacks. With a lot of families struggling financially, several groups are providing school supplies, food and even gas cards to families in need. In just one week, Oklahoma City Public Schools will be opening their doors to thousands of students on their first day of school. “We wanted to invest in our young people. Invest in our community in a way that has never been done before. We’re going to have games and prizes but more than that we are going to have resources. We are going to give them backpacks, school supplies, haircuts,” said Lt. Wayland Cubit with OCPD.

The event marked the second of its kind, bringing together leaders from multiple backgrounds for discussions on how to overcome some of society s most difficult problems: racial justice, police reform and building bridges between communities. The smell of hot, fresh coffee and breakfast foods filled the cafeteria of Millwood High School as laughter and conversation flowed from the tables. As the lights lowered and guests stilled, they were met with images from the Tulsa Race Massacre as Greenwood Rising, detailed the work being done and still to be done in Tulsa.

By: Hunter McKee OKLAHOMA CITY - Today marks one year since George Floyd was murdered by a now-former Minneapolis police officer who knelt on his neck for more than nine minutes. The video, seen around the world, sparked conversations and change right here in the metro. Just days following Floyd s death, large crowds could be seen marching and chanting throughout the streets in downtown Oklahoma City, demanding justice and change. One Oklahoma City police officer recalled that week, he said what happened a year ago can be a building block for everyone. We are not, a year later, where we were last year. We are talking more, Lt. Wayland Cubit said. We are stepping into uncomfortable conversations, but yet, we still have a ways to go.
