Watford athletics club pays tribute to Prince Philip ahead of funeral

An athletics club based at a stadium in Watford opened by the Duke of Edinburgh has paid a touching tribute to him ahead of his funeral. After 73 years of marriage, the Queen will say farewell to Prince Philip during a televised funeral service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle this afternoon, attended by a small group of close family and friends. Covid regulations have reduced the scope of the service with public elements cancelled, mourners reduced from around 800 to just 30, and all guests wearing face masks and sitting apart. Watford Harriers Athletics Club, which holds events at Woodside Stadium, says it is “proud” of the legacy left in the town by Prince Philip, who was invited to open the arena in 1955.

When Windermere Pram Race would blow away the cobwebs! | The Westmorland Gazette

BY ANDREW THOMAS For many years people in Windermere marked the coming of the New Year with a fancy dress pram race around the town’s streets. It was a fun and colourful event that always drew the crowds on New Year’s Day. That was certainly the case in 1993 when unusually dry and mild weather attracted many people to line the streets to watch the spectacular race. The 18th pram race was organised by Windermere Lions Club. Twenty-three teams turned out in colourful perambulators of all shapes and sizes for the event, which was firmly fixed in Windermere’s social calendar.
