Case in point, the bodies of two fishermen were recovered from the river earlier this month and that has prompted New Milford officials to issue a warning to all residents not to swim or fish in the Housatonic River, especially in the area near the Bleachery Dam. The Dam should never be approached from upstream, downstream, or even the shoreline.

Get our free mobile app According to the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP), 39-year-old João Paulo Lucas of Danbury had been enjoying Easter Sunday with his family while hiking at Lovers Leap State Park in New Milford. Officials say that at some point around 3:45 PM that afternoon, Lucas had been separated from his family as he was headed down a secluded section of the park that overlooks Lake Lillinonah, and that was when he was reportedly last seen. By around 6:15 PM that evening, Lucas family filed a report with CT DEEP, explaining the situation, prompting a search of the area with assistance from local agencies such as the DEEP Conservation Police, the New Milford Police Department, the Water Witch Hose Company, and Newtown Underwater Search & Rescue. According to the report, Lucas body was location in Lake Lillinonah late Sunday night.

Since the 1970s, his rare smile and steady presence were a staple there, his chief said. The longtime, second-generation volunteer firefighter with the historic Water Witch Hose Company No. 2 of New Milford, died at 69 on Feb. 24 after an illness. Golembeski was a lifelong New Milford resident, spending nearly a half-century serving his community. From New Milford High School to the Water Witch firehouse, he was a familiar presence around the town. “Bobby was always around the firehouse, whether it was a training night, a work night, cleaning, doing training,” Fire Chief Richard Squires said. “If you needed somebody to take one of the fire trucks to a function or for standby, you would ask him, and he would do it with a smile on his face and very proud to do it.”

February 25, 2021 Robert S. Golembeski NEW MILFORD – Robert S. Golembeski, 69, of New Milford, passed away peacefully on Feb. 24, 2021. He was the loving husband of Muriel (Johnson) Golembeski. Robert was born in New Milford on June 14, 1951, the son of the late Stanley and Anna (Docktor) Golembeski. A lifelong resident of New Milford, Robert graduated from New Milford High School in 1969. He was married on June 12, 1982, and worked for Kimberly-Clark Corporation and Yankee Gas. In recent years, Robert also worked closely with his son, David, as a groundskeeper at Pomperaug Golf Club. Robert was a 48-year volunteer firefighter with the Water Witch Hose Company No. 2 of New Milford. He served in numerous positions and established many lasting friendships through his years of service at the firehouse. He also spent many years as a volunteer EMT with the New Milford Ambulance, and served as chief in 1990.
