Ta-Nehisi Coates will write the screenplay for a new Superman movie for DC Films and Warner Bros, it was shared on Friday.
The project is in very early development, but the new film is being produced by JJ Abrams Bad Robot, with Hannah Minghella also producing.
There is no director attached to the project at this time and the search for an actor to play Kal-El, better known as Superman, has not yet begun.

J.J. Abrams is producing the feature, which, according to sources, is being set up as a Black Superman story.
Acclaimed essayist and novelist Ta-Nehisi Coates has been hired to pen the script for a feature reboot of Superman that will be produced by J.J. Abrams.
“To be invited into the DC Extended Universe by Warner Bros., DC Films and Bad Robot is an honor,” said Coates in a statement to
Shadow and Act, a website dedicated to the African diaspora in the arts. “I look forward to meaningfully adding to the legacy of America s most iconic mythic hero.
Between The World And Me and
The Water Dancer, but he also has comic book writing experience on his CV, with runs on Marvel s
Captain America and
Black Panther titles. He s switching to DC for a huge new announcement, as
Shadow And Act reports that he s been hired to write a new Superman film that JJ Abrams will produce for Warner Bros.
Naturally, plot details have not been announced, and no director is attached yet. The site does mention that it appears Warners will go looking for a new actor to play the iconic superhero, assuming Henry Cavill isn t invited to return. And, of course, given the DC Extended Universe s new forays into the multiverse, there s always a chance that a new Supes could exist at the same time as Cavill continues.
The Man of Steel might soon fly back into theaters soon. According to
Deadline, Warner Bros. has tapped Ta-Nehisi Coates to write a new superman film, with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot set to produce.
There’s no word on what the plot of the film will be if it’ll follow the current DCEU continuity started with Zack Snyder’s
Man of Steel and continued with
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and both versions of
Justice League, or if it’ll be a complete reboot that starts over with the character who was first played in a feature-length film by Christopher Reeve (pictured above).
