21-year-old fire recruit dies after collapsing during training in N.J.

A 21-year-old Irvington Fire Department recruit died Tuesday, days after he collapsed during a training exercise at a New Jersey public safety training academy, officials said.
Victor Melillo collapsed last Thursday while training in the parking lot of the academy in Parsippany, according to a statement from Morris County’s government. Several first responders, including EMTs, rushed to help Melillo shortly after 9:30 a.m.
Members of the Morris County Office of Emergency Management’s Emergency Medical Services Team and paramedics brought him to Morristown Medical Center, according to the statement. He was in critical condition for five days.
