Lord Hall faced a number of challenges while at the helm of the BBC for eight years, before Tim Davie took over last September.
Among the most crippling, was the Government s decision to waive the licence fee for over-75s – which was changed last year to only cover those on pension credits.
Another was the battle to crack down on fee evasion and regaining the quarter-of-a-million people who chose not to renew their licence.
Lord Hall said the BBC had considered a number of different ways to charge the public, including a means-tested system, deducting the fee from council tax and more.
