CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) - Nearly 200,000 Covid-19 vaccine doses have been wasted at providers and pharmacies across the country since late March, according to CDC data obtained by CNN.
The 19 News Vaccine Team wanted to see how many doses have been thrown out in Ohio.
We found 7.1 million doses have been administered as of May 2, and unusable doses since vaccinations began in December âmake up approximately .1% of the doses administered,â according to the Ohio Department of Health.
Investigators: State says expired vaccines not dangerous but still investigating whether any were given
Investigators: Growing concerns surrounding expired vaccines By Jessica Jaglois | March 2, 2021 at 5:38 PM CST - Updated March 2 at 6:37 PM
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Since news broke that the state is investigating whether expired doses were administered, calls and emails have flooded into WMC Action News 5.
One of those concerned Memphis residents is Bernard Williams. He received his first COVID-19 vaccine dose at the Pipkin building in January.
âIâm very concerned. Iâm 82 years old and I want to be here a little longer,â he said.
Williams became concerned after seeing the lot number from his vaccination card on the news.
The newly-obtained data shows a better picture of this waste statewide. As with any vaccine distribution, it is anticipated that there will be minor accidents resulting in vaccine being discarded due to expiration or broken vials, but health care providers have been working hard to ensure all vaccines are used and stored properly, a NCDHHS spokesperson wrote to the I-Team in an email.
NCDHHS said it has not received any reports of significant batches being lost.
COVID-19 vaccine providers are required to report all doses that are unused, spoiled, expired or wasted, due to the limited supply nationwide. Over the course of any large-scale vaccination effort, a small number of doses may be lost inadvertently, such as a dropped syringe on floor, however, data on wasted vaccine is an essential metric for state and federal health agencies storage and handling procedures to maintain COVID-19 vaccine cold chain and minimize the likelihood of vaccine loss or damage during shipment,
