On the anniversary of his death, the Springfield Police Department added the name of Officer Christopher Walsh on Tuesday to its memorial for officers killed in the line of duty.
Walsh, 32, became the first Springfield Police Department officer killed in action in 88 years last March when he was shot while trying to tend to a victim at the scene of a mass shooting at the Kum & Go store on East Chestnut Expressway.
Springfield Police Chief Paul Williams said Tuesday was a tragic day but also one that was necessary for healing.
A large crowd of officers and city officials showed up to support the family of Officer Walsh as the memorial was unveiled.

It was a year ago today that a man drove his car into a Springfield gas station, then shot and killed a Springfield Police officer and three others before killing himself.
There’s now a memorial in place at the Kum n’ Go where the shooting happened.
Police say Joaquin Roman, 31, crashed into the Kum n’ Go at Chestnut and Prince Lane on March 16, 2020.
He then went inside and shot Troy D. Rapp, 57, Shannon R. Perkins, 46, and Matthew Hicks, 22.
All three were from Springfield.
Rapp worked at the Kum and Go store.

Since they did not have a traditional wedding, Chris and Sheri Walsh were planning to gather friends and family for a recommitment ceremony in 2020.
But instead of shopping for a wedding gown at Gracie s Bridal this past March, Sheri Walsh picked out a black dress to wear to her husband s funeral.
Chris Walsh, a 32-year-old Springfield Police Department officer, was among four people killed by a lone gunman March 15 at the Kum & Go store on East Chestnut Expressway.
A year later, Sheri Walsh wants her husband to be remembered as a normal guy who did a beautiful thing. And she is working to continue his legacy of trying to make Springfield a better place.
