The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is working to learn more about Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C).
The agency is asking 4 hospitals, including Phoenix Children s, to help them find answers.
ABC15 Health Insider Dr. Wassim Ballan is no stranger to MIS-C. He is an infectious disease doctor at Phoenix Children s and is now on a team of medical experts selected by the CDC to investigate this rare but serious, pediatric health condition that affects children, weeks after a COVID-19 infection or exposure.

Since the start of the pandemic, three people have died in Arizona related to a rare COVID-linked illness in children, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services.
A representative for ADHS told ABC15 they have received reports of three confirmed deaths related to multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children, or MIS-C. Citing privacy concerns, the agency would not disclose further details.

âWe havenât seen yet at this point anyone coming in with SARS-COVID-2 and the influenza virus,â says infectious disease expert Dr. Wassim Ballan from Phoenix Childrenâs hospital.
Right now is the typical height of the flu season. The latest data from the Arizona Department of Health Services show that in 2020, the last week of January in Arizona saw 2,819 confirmed flu cases. That number is just under 20 for the same week in 2021. In other words, this is the worst time of the year for flu cases in Arizona cases, but right now we are down 95% compared to last year.
