Our pick of the month, black death at the golden gate, the race to save america from the bubonic plague is the reason we are here this evening. Welcome david randall. [applause] thank you all for coming, especially with the weather outside. It is like to be inside where it is dry. One thing i realized, my first book, when i went and talked about that i realized many people are coming to the talks because they had their own sleep disorders and wanted to talk to somebody about it. This book is about the plague. If you think you have the plague this is not the place for you. There is a hospital three blocks that way, that is where you should go instead. One of the questions people ask me is how did you get interested in this book, the last book i wrote was about malibu. They use to own all of malibu, how they got it, how they lost it. One of the main characters comes up to San Francisco in 1900 and read the letter the bachelors wife, this is the weakest place i have ever seen and there ar
Much. Thank you all for being here, appreciate it. Just some quick biographical stuff first, pete. Pete, you, as i was noting, were in the armed services. Heck of a basketball player in high school. I dont think you start off your career as a commentator, as a news guy. How did you and fox news ever meet . Good question. My First Television appearance ever was on msnbcs hardball with chris matthews. Ive never done tv before in my life and i had a marine buddy who had done tv twice, so he was an expert. He told me, he said just lean forward. Thats his first tip, it makes you look better stature, better posture. Lean forward and dont let the host cut you off. 46 times, Kris Matthews cut me off. So, i was a newbie, i did not ever anticipate id go into tv. I ran a couple vets organizations when i came back from iraq and then afghanistan. One, supporting the war fodder on the battlefield and then supporting reform at the va, still an ongoing issue obviously. Through that i ended up getting
Are just few minutes away. What do we know about the strategy on both sides dpoeg ini into this meeting . Part of something that will happen is something that we dont know and a narrowly focused group of attendees and secretary tillerson and foreign minister lavrov. Dialogue relationship building. It also limits who would be in the room able to interpret and perhaps share publicly what goes on in this meeting. So, theres a secrecy element to it. Theres an intimacy to it, as well. We know the u. S. Had wanted this kind of a oneonone meeting as opposed to what we sometimes refer to as a more casual, yet planned meeting with world leader. The president will do some of those in another context. But for all of the obvious reasons this meeting needed to be a facetoface proper meeting, if you will. Now, having covered past president s and their meetings with putin, chris, you and i both know the u. S. Prepares and the russians prepare sort of a Psychological Assessment of the leader. They wan
Than vote for a democrat, yes, you heard me, because the president , of course, has personally remained silent. Two women in his administration are now speaking for him. First the press secretary, Sarah Huckabee sanders today. Obviously the president wants people both in the house and the senate that support his agenda. That means roy moore, the republican, accused by eight women with corroborated accounts of harassment assaults is better for the United States than the Democrat Doug Jones. And Kellyanne Conway, earlier in the day, making the same point loud and clear. Doug jones in alabama, folks, dont be fooled. Hell be a vote against tax cuts. Hes weak on crime, weak on borders. Hes strong on raising your taxes. Hes terrible for Property Owners and doug jones is a liberal which why hes not saying anything and why the media are trying to boost him. So vote roy moore . Im telling you we want the votes in the senate to get this tax this tax bill through. That was a loud and clear endors
Administration has handed us a very busy wednesday night indeed. We begin with the troubling news about russian hacking into the 2016 u. S. Elections, which, of course, is part of the foundation of the entire russia investigation. Our colleagues here at nbc news report exclusively that the department of Homeland Security has found that russia actually penetrated Voter Registration rolls in several states ahead of the 2016 election. Here is the departments head of Cyber Security. I cant talk about classified information publicly. For the visibility that we did have, we saw targeting of 26 states and an exceptionally small number of that 21 were actually successfully penetrated. This report comes as secretary of state Rex Tillerson warns the u. S. May not be able to prevent future russian interference in such things. Yesterday he warned that if russia attempts to meddle in the 2018 midterm elections, there is very little the u. S. Will be able to do to stop it. I think its important we j
