the world. they said isis isn t gone, north korea doesn t want to denuclearize and that iran is abiding by the nuclear deal. basically they said without saying in the direct swords the claims the president made hasn t been born out by their intelligence. the president wrote this, he said the intelligence people have a passive and naive view when it comes to the dangers of iran. they are wrong. tick a step back not necessarily about iran but about the concept that the intelligence chiefs are saying one thing, the president is saying another. do you wish he would listen to them? absolutely. i was on intelligence last year, i m back on arm services now so i ve been able to see with my own eyes and visit different parts of the world and what i seefer and do know is very concerning to all of us. i trust our intelligence
the nation s top spy chiefs contradicts president trump. president trump relies on his gut while the intel leaders gave sobering assessments based on what they said were facts. we have won against isis. we have beaten them and we have beaten them badly. isis still commands thousands of fighters in iraq and syria. chairman kim, we have a great chemistry. we re well on our way. we signed an agreement that said we ll begin the immediate denuclearization. it is unlikely to completely give up its nuclear weapons and production capabilities. i have president putin. he just said it s not russia. i will say this. i don t see any reason why it would be. not only have the russians continued to do it in 2018 but
one to speak with nuance. we know that. much nuance or any in some cases. it was a rebuke. i don t think they are going out of their way to draw lines. i think they want to stick to the facts. dan coats made it clear he wants to present the intelligence he sees regardless of the politics there. yeah. the senate wants him to do exactly what he did give them a clear idea of what s happening in the world, where the threats are. i think the issue sometimes with the president is he sees things in a binary. he either wins or loses. he wants to win both arguments. he wants isis gone. he wants out of syria. he wants to be the guy that got north korea to denuclearize. if he says it, maybe it will come true. it sends the wrong signals to our partners around the world. they want to know our president is in line with what they hear from our intelligence
house, shawna thomas from vice news tonight. mark, it wasn t just isis. the intelligence chiefs contradicted the president on north korea saying they haven t denuclearized and won t as far as they are concerned. they contradicted him on iran and certainly on russia s intentions on meddling in elections. you have been inside the white house. when the president watches this from his intelligence chiefs who drew a line between what he s said publicly and what they believe how do you think it hits him? honestly, the president has a great relationship with the intelligence community that leads him. his relationship with mike pompeo is terrific. mike was director of the cia before secretary of state. he has a close relationship with dan coats. the intelligence team around him is one of the strongest in the white house. i trust what dan coats said to the senate yesterday. i think the president s relationship with them remains
we have seen indications that they are continuing to adapt their model. joining us now is independent senator angus king of maine. he serves on the intelligence and armed services committee. senator, great to have you. you were there yesterday when the intel chiefs briefed all of you. so what do you make of president trump s different concept of national security threats from his intelligence chiefs? the first thing is i think dan coats, the director of national intelligence, really summarized the mission of the whole intelligence community in a beautiful way that i had never heard before. he said our job is to seek the truth and speak the truth. to seek the truth and speak the truth. that s exactly what they did yesterday. there were things that were concerning, but the differences with the administration weren t that surprising. this has been the assessment on isis, on iran, on north korea and on russia for over a year.
