Her mothers folks are from virginia and probably her fathers as well. John converts to quakerism and they go off and live in North Carolina in a quaker community. As far as we know dolley was born there so she is North Carolinas only first lady. What is sad about that she spends most of her life denying it. We think it has to do with her fathers shady Business Practices and they move back to virginia. So shes raised in the world of slave holding. Her father released his slaves as a quaker. Is that the cause of his inability to continue his business . I think he had other problems besides that. He couldnt farm so they moved to that chilly Northern City of philadelphia. Im not sure if you know so much about her thoughts of slavery. How is it that she reconciled herself to actually having slaves in the white house . I think thats a good question. Im not sure i know the answer to that. But she did not free any of her slaves as her father had. And she didnt speak out against slavery so the

Shockingly, the democrats are much more successful at getting their womens issues bills through. Interestingly we have two states where republican men are quite successful at the same time. Why . They were both transitioning into republican controlled chambers. Thats arkansas and texas, which kind of bookend here, both of which have changed over to republican. So it gives a little evidence foffer that longterm party change as well. Here in the republican controlled chambers, you see a stark difference. Republicans become more successful. Particularly republican men are the most successful about legislating about womens issues. Particularly republican men have the least to say about womens issues. The
Welcome to cbs this morning. More than 1,000 flights on the east coast have been canceled. Huge storm is dumping snow on the Nations Capital and the midatlantic. The storm is expected to hit virginia and washington especially hard. Chip reid is in leesburg virginia, out in the elements. Chip good morning. Reporter well, good morning, norah and charlie. In leesburg the snow started a little after midnight. I peeked out the window 4 00 a. M. , barely any snow at all. Now it is coming down seriously. We have about three inches. Were expecting up to a foot of snow here. This is the biggest snowstorm theyve had in this region in more than two years, also the biggest snowstorm theyve had in chicago which was slammed by this storm yesterday. More than 1,000 flights were canceled at chicago area airports. Hundreds of schools were closed.
