officials say at least eight people are dead after a smuggling boat capsized off the coast of san diego. authorities responded to the scene after someone on a separate boat called 911 to report victims in the water. they say rough conditions made the recovery effort difficult. we were in recovery mode for about five hours after that. the access to the area was very difficult due to the tide and the coastal cliff there. that area is a very hazardous area even in the daytime. it has a series of sandbars and inshore rip currents. you would think you could land in sand and get to waist-high or knee-high water and think you re able to get to land. this is one of the worst maritime smuggling tragedies that i can think of in california, certainly here in the city of san diego. authorities are continuing to search for any additional victims. we ll bring you more details as we get them. also happening this hour in california, a desperate race to rescue people trapped in floodwat
