[inaudible conversations] good morning. Weve proven once again if you want a nice crowd, serve some food. But we do have a great crowd. Thank you everyone for coming. On behalf of the National Review institute, its president and my fellow trustees including here and now, rich lowry. I would like to welcome you to this special conversation about an important book, an important new book a torch kept lit great lives of the 20th century. My name is jack fowler, and im the publisher of National Review [applause] we will applaud at the National Review. The institute i institute is our organization. A nonprofit educational founded 25 years ago by william f. Buckley junior. So im going to tell some stories, and you oregonians may know some of the stories, and you may not know others. But ill start with how i came to this story. And, actually, whats surprising about it is how this story was very well known in its day. In 1836 when Washington Irving was commissioned by John Jacob Astor to write the story of these events 20 years after they occurred, irvings book, also called astoria, was a best seller of 1836. And those events have been largely forgotten in the american consciousness. I think you in oregon know a little bit more about them or im sure some of you know a lot more about them. But in the national consciousness, theyre largely forgotten, except among historians and people who really follow western history. So it is a really important story. Its historically significant, and its a great adventure story. And thats partly what attracted me to it. And its also a story that i feel needs to be told because those events have had a big impact on the sha
Are studying you and your go to [applause] mark thank you for coming. I am mark jacob. Stephen case is to my left. We started studying a couple years ago stephen discovered many years ago the story of Peggy Shippen. She is probably the most dangerous teenage girl in American History. [laughter] mark her husband is much more famous. It is just a story that nobody really knew. In fact, it was poorly understood at the time even, and by the time anyone understood what the story was, no one seemed to care anymore. Peggy was mrs. Benedict arnold, and she liked it that way. She would rather be the victimized wife of a traitor, rather than the real truth, which was a coconspirator to try to bring down the American Revolution, who had full be Founding Fathers and got off scott free which is exactly what she did. More than a century after her death, british papers are finally studied by american scholars. And they find out there is all of this really important circumstantial evidence to indicate
New this morning. A flight was delayed over 3 hours early this morning. After a possible bomb threat was discovered on board. Officials at mccarran say a frontier flight came in just at 11 last night. After passengers exited. Cleaning crews found a paper with vague words scribbled on it. A bomb squad was called out as a precaution. And the all clear was given just before 3. A man has been arrested. After being accused of running a se his home. Now a near victim of david coil is speaking out. Saying she told the 63yearold to leave her alone. But he just came onto her even stronger. Cyndi lundenberg has more. I think he should be put in jail for a very long time before he hurts someone else this 18 year old. Asked to remain anonymous but tells me she was almost a victim of david coil. Coil is accused of using craigslist to lure underage girls into sexual encourters with older men. This teen says she was 17 when her coil offered her 3000dollars a day for work. He was explaining its about

And they find out there is all of this really important circumstantial evidence to isicate that Peggy Shippen certainly part of the plot. There is no smoking gun, but there is tons of circumstantial evidence. I think any reasonable person would agree she knew all about it. But she had gotten a pass from histor
