Police in Sri Lanka said Monday they have arrested two people in connection with the death of a 9-year-old girl who was repeatedly beaten during a ritual they believed would drive away an evil spirit. The two suspects the woman performing the exorcism and the girl s mother were to appear in court Monday to hear charges over the girl s death, which occurred over the weekend in Delgoda, a small town about 25 miles northeast of the capital, Colombo.

A Sri Lankan mom and a so-called exorcist have been arrested for the death of a 9-year-old girl who was repeatedly beaten with a cane during a ritual to expel a supposed evil spirit from her body, police said Monday.

COLOMBO(News 1st): Mohamed Rinath Fathima Rizka, a resident of Kanduboda was taken to a witchcraft ritual centre after she was said to have been possessed by a demonic spirit.
According to area residents said the shaman at the witchcraft ritual centre had assaulted the child asking the demon to leave the child.
Area residents alerted authorities afterwards.
However, when police arrived at the scene the child had already passed away.
The Mahara acting magistrate Wasantha Ramanayake conducted the magisterial inquiry at the scene of the crime.
