For Don Was and his new WDET show, it s good tunes, fun stories and a longtime dream fulfilled Brian McCollum, Detroit Free Press © Gabi Porter Detroit-born bassist, producer and record executive Don Was. Turns out the teenage Don Was finally wound up exactly where he wanted to be: on the late-night WDET airwaves. Growing up during the ‘60s in Oak Park, the eventual Grammy-winning producer, bassist and Blue Note Records president found himself enchanted by the WDET show “Jazz Today,” hosted by Bud Spangler. Along with WCHD host Ed Love and, later, freeform FM stations like WABX, it sparked a lifelong love of local broadcasting.
