Rubel Shelly: George Floyd verdict made with justice for one
Rubel Shelly
Our Pledge of Allegiance affirms that every American will be treated fairly, honorably, and ethically. We end it with the promissory words “with liberty and justice for all.”
Justice was served last week in the inexcusable killing of George Floyd.
A Minnesota jury found former police officer Derek Chauvin guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in Mr. Floyd’s death.
Several factors made it practically and ethically impossible for the jury to render any other verdict. Video recordings of the event were available to the jury. They showed a Black man pinned to the pavement and pleading with “Mr. Officer” to let him breathe. His final words were, “Please, I can’t breathe.”
