WARROAD, Minn. Kids in Warroad don t arrive in the world with their skates already laced.
But almost.
“I was born to skate, my mom said,” 9-year-old Anderson Myers proudly states as he shoots a puck into an empty net on the Warroad River.
Mere weeks ago, Anderson’s birthright was taken away.
“They said that we can t go skating,” Anderson says.
COVID-19 restrictions may have temporarily shuttered Warroad arenas in the late fall and early winter, but the community, which proclaims itself Hockeytown USA, didn’t take the closures standing still.

It was cold, quiet, and well after dark when Matthew Baxley glimpsed the slumbering fish directly beneath his feet. He was ice skating in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, a Minnesota landscape of boreal forest and seemingly boundless lakes. Below him, black ice revealed an underwater world in crisp detail.
Each stroke of Baxley’s skates sent vibrations across the lake’s solid surface. The weight of a single skater can trigger groans and pops, or the “pew-pew” sound of cartoon ray guns, adding to the otherworldly feel of gliding through space. The early winter’s cold, snowless weather had turned the Boundary Waters into a perfectly smooth, natural playground.

Like much of the world this past year, residents of Warroad, Minn. only 6 miles from the Canadian border were feeling restless due to pandemic restrictions. So a few locals banded together to create a recreational outdoors project, which they now call the Riverbend Skate Path, a nearly 2.5-mile stretch of frozen river that has allowed folks to come together once again. 8:30 am, Feb. 3, 2021 ×
