Escambia County Sheriff’s Office detectives discovered cellphone data that placed Newkirk at the crime scene at the time of the shooting, according to his arrest report.
The shooting was reported shortly after 11 p.m. Dec. 29 at the Forest Creek Apartments at 34 Patton Drive. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Kennell lying on the ground in front of an apartment building with several gunshot wounds. He was transported to Baptist Hospital, where he died.
Investigators reviewed the apartment complex s security footage and observed that two people had been following Kennell immediately before the shooting. The vehicle travels to a parking spot, backs in and parks, then two subjects walk through the gate, which is directly adjacent to where the shooting later occurs, to an area where Kennell is standing at the front of the complex, the investigator wrote in Newkirk s arrest report as he described the security footage.
